Tackling a Large Scale Painting Commission in a Small Studio
About two months ago, I received a message inquiring about a custom painting commission. As showcased on my website, I typically work on a smaller scale. Being asked to create two 24×36 inch paintings was both exciting and a bit overwhelming. My mind went into overdrive. Did I have the studio space to make this happen? Could I accurately estimate art materials, time, and pricing for a large canvas project? Most of all, I wondered if I could push past that familiar blank canvas syndrome and approach these paintings like I do all my others.
The answer to the first question was to paint on the floor which provided my quads with a full workout. Between the art and the accidental aerobics, I’m now qualified to teach a fitness class called “Stretch & Strokes.”
Well, here are the finished pieces, and I have to say, I really enjoyed the process. Looking back, the biggest challenge was definitely working in a small home studio. I often ended up covered in paint, worried that even the smallest movement might stir up dust that could settle into the drying surface.
The end result? A happy client = a happy artist. Taking on this large scale painting commission pushed me creatively. I’m proud to now offer custom large-format artwork as part of my portfolio.
